What Is a Score Counter?
A score counter is a simple tool for tracking the score of two competing teams or players during a game or match. Instead of writing numbers on paper or trying to remember the score, you tap a button each time a point is scored — the scoreboard updates instantly.
Our free online score counter works on any device — no app, no download, no account needed. Open the page, name your teams, and start scoring.
How to Use This Score Counter
The scoreboard shows two teams side by side. For each team:
- Click +1, +2, or +3 to add points instantly
- Click −1 to subtract a point (for corrections)
- Click the score number directly to type in any value
- Click the team name to rename it (e.g., "Lakers" vs "Celtics")
Use Reset Scores to bring both scores back to zero at the start of a new game. The Swap button flips the team positions (useful when the home/away sides change).
Scores are saved automatically to your browser. If you accidentally close the tab, your scores will be restored when you return.
Quick +1/+2/+3 Buttons
The three quick-add buttons cover the most common scoring values in popular sports. Basketball players score 1 (free throw), 2 (regular basket), or 3 (three-pointer). In rugby, you score 3 (penalty), 5 (try), or 7 (converted try). Customize button use to match whatever game you're playing.
Common Uses for an Online Score Counter
Basketball Scorekeeping
Basketball is one of the most popular uses. Tap +2 for a field goal, +3 for a three-pointer, and +1 for free throws. The score updates in real time, so everyone watching can see it on your screen.
Soccer & Football Scores
Soccer scoring is simple — tap +1 for each goal. For American football, use +6 for a touchdown, +1 or +2 for the conversion, and +3 for a field goal.
Tennis, Badminton & Racket Sports
Track game-by-game or set-by-set scores. Use +1 to record each game won, and reset between sets.
Board Games & Card Games
Track points in Scrabble, Rummy, or any card game where players accumulate scores. The ability to edit scores directly makes it easy to enter large point totals after each round.
Classroom & Quiz Games
Teachers use score counters for classroom quiz competitions. Name the two teams, tap +1 for each correct answer, and the winning team is immediately visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I track more than two teams?
This score counter is designed for two-team matchups. For tracking multiple teams or players simultaneously, try our multiple counter tool where you can create and name as many counters as you need.
Can scores go below zero?
Yes. Tap the −1 button repeatedly, or click the score to type a negative number. Some games (like certain card games) can result in negative scores.
Are scores saved automatically?
Yes. Both team scores and team names are saved to your browser's local storage automatically. They will be restored if you reload the page — unless you clear your browser data or use private mode.
Can I change the +1/+2/+3 buttons to other values?
Currently the buttons are fixed at +1, +2, +3. For any point value, click the score number directly to edit it to any amount. Custom step values are on our roadmap for a future update.
