How to Count Sentences
Type or paste your text into the box above. The counter treats a sentence as any run of text ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. It is smart about the usual traps:
- Abbreviations like Mr., Dr., e.g. and U.S. do not end a sentence.
- Decimal numbers such as 3.14 are not counted as two sentences.
- Ellipses (…) and repeated punctuation (!!!) count once.

Some assignments are set in sentences rather than words — "write a five sentence paragraph", or a summary of no more than three sentences. Counting by hand is easy to get wrong, especially with quotes and abbreviations in the text.
Readability

The longest sentence stat points you straight at your worst offender. A sentence over about 40 words is usually two or three ideas that would read better split apart.
