What Is a Syllable Counter?

A syllable counter tells you how many syllables your text contains. Paste a poem, a line of lyrics, a name, or a whole paragraph and you get the total instantly — plus a breakdown showing the count for every individual word, and the syllables on each separate line.

That per-line figure is the part poets use most: writing a haiku means hitting 5, 7 and 5, and this tool shows those three numbers as you type.

How to Count Syllables

The rule of thumb is simple: count the vowel sounds you actually pronounce. Each group of vowels said together forms one syllable.

  • wa-ter — two vowel sounds, two syllables.
  • beau-ti-ful — "eau" is one sound, so three syllables, not four.
  • ta-ble — the final "le" carries its own sound.
  • hope — the silent "e" at the end adds nothing, so one syllable.

If you are unsure about a word, say it out loud and rest your hand under your chin. Your jaw drops once per syllable.

What People Use It For

Haiku and Poetry

Haiku follow a 5-7-5 pattern across three lines, 17 syllables in total. Other forms have their own rules: a limerick leans on a bouncy rhythm, a sonnet line usually runs to ten syllables. The per-line counts above let you check the shape of a poem while you write it.

Songwriting and Lyrics

Lyrics have to fit a melody. Counting syllables per line is the quickest way to see why one line sings and the next one trips — usually the second line is carrying two extra beats.

Teaching and Learning English

Teachers use syllable counts for phonics, spelling and reading level work. Learners use them to get stress and rhythm right, which matters more for sounding natural than individual sounds do.

Naming Things

Short names stick. Brand and product names of two or three syllables are easier to remember and say, so a quick count is a useful sanity check on a shortlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you count syllables in a word?

Count the vowel sounds. Each group of vowels pronounced together is one syllable, and a silent "e" at the end does not count.

How many syllables are in a haiku?

Seventeen, arranged as 5, 7 and 5 across three lines. Use the per-line counts above to check each line.

Is the syllable count always correct?

It is accurate for the large majority of English words, but syllables depend on pronunciation and accent. Words like "fire" or "every" are said with one or two syllables by different speakers, so if a result looks odd, say the word aloud and trust your ear.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting runs entirely inside your browser and your text is never sent to a server.

Need a different kind of count?

Use the sentence counter for sentences, words and readability, or the online counter to count anything by hand.
